A Token of Something

I have been thinking about this for the past couple of days.

My blog is not a very famous blog. I do not have many readers, just a couple. I normally post about incidents related more to my life and my thoughts. I don't do politics. I don't do world economies. I don't do social well-being. I really focus on me.

This is going to change. I want this to change because I want what I post, what I write, to be something my readers can relate to. I want the people who read my blog to gain something, be it big or small, from the posts I posted.

I do not have a good writing skill. It's just very, very average. So bear with me. And I think I will only be able to focus more on many aspects of the philosophies of life. So at least I know there is a path for my poor blog.

Also, I want to thank all of you who read my posts, may they be random or spiteful or hyper. I hope they at the very least entertained you for a little bit.

Dear Fatima Nasri.

This post is dedicated to you.

In Sayfol, you met your best friend, Ranya. After graduation, she left for Canada to continue her studies. In MCKL, you met another best friend. And now, you're leaving him for Germany.

And, it's not exactly an easy thing for him to accept.

The idea of your leaving to Germany is rather surreal. Probably because you're leaving too soon, at a time when it wasn't time for any intake at all. (Well, people normally begin their classes in September) And, many people haven't even left yet. You're one of the first ones, and I am still not used to my friends leaving me. Especially one who has made an impact. And, I almost don't even know where Germany is! It's like your departure is a lie, a fairy tale, a hoax, anything but a reality.

Albeit all, I have to accept that you are leaving tonight. And I don't even know when is your flight.

The memory of the early days of our friendship is all a haze to me. I will probably need your help to remind me because you are always the one with a sharp memory for things like this. I don't remember how it began, the only thing I remember is, we got along very well, very fast. It made me felt grounded, like there is a chance for a real relationship even at a new, strange place.

We were so different. You weren't even a Malaysian. Yet, we clicked. We had an understanding that was actually frightening, now that I recall. We would stumble upon a certain weird, awkward or funny situation, give each other a look and laugh like there was no tomorrow. We talked so much when we were in college, mainly due to the fact that all our classes were the same. Well I didn't talk much I think. You did most of the talking. :P But I enjoyed it nevertheless. I enjoyed listening to your rants about your life because, to be honest, weird things always happened to you and the stories about your life was always, always so funny! (This is a compliment!)

We did so many things together! We spent so much time together! I didn't even realize that we did, until rumors started spreading. Was that awkward? I don't exactly remember.

Well, among the things we did? Student Council. Sports Carnival. Birthday celebrations. Festivals in college. Our first Midsummer Masquerade! That was a whole lot of fun! With the make-up and nail polish. You seemed so cool at that time by the way. Because I hadn't known you well then. Which means after I knew you better, you were no longer cool. :P What else did we do together? Library time? Exams? Pre-exams? Post-exams? Monorail? Times Square? Did we watch movies? OH! March intake orientation camp! Remember when we were supposed to wake up in the middle of the night for the midnight game? I remember forcing you to wake up and you were trying to hit me by randomly swaying your hand at me from your sleeping bag. It was such a futile attempt, I would really have laughed out loud if I weren't so overwhelmed by my sleepiness. And that time, I was respecting you much that I tried so hard not to look at you because, well, your hair was undone. We had so much fun time, with everyone else! And also the bad times. Being late for classes. Getting reprimanded for no good reason. Conflicts. Misunderstandings. Homework problems. (LOL) How you hated some people picking fun at you. So many more.

Well the thing is, you are one of a kind. And even though after exams, we had hardly met up, it didn't mean that I never thought of you. You're not a friend easy enough to forget, y'know? So when you're gone, to Germany, it will not be the same. Your absence, from Malaysia, is different from your absence, caused by lack of meeting up. Your flying to Germany is making an impact. I have no way of putting what I feel into words, but all I know is, I am feeling emotional, and slightly sad, about your departure. Also at your refusal to tell me the time of your flight. And your refusal to let people send you off at KLIA.

But on top of those, I will miss you. Dearly. Because I have no idea when will we ever meet again. I will miss you. Because I am (sometimes) working for your mother and that will definitely make me think of you. And she has told me things you don't know, which makes it all the more emotional for me. But again, on top of it all, I wish you well, my friend. All the best!

Free Shuttle Bus Service provided by MidValley

After the talk in UTAR this morning, I had to take the public bus back to KL. I was supposed to go to either Asia Jaya LRT station or Universiti. A bus came just when I was about to reach the bus stop (and it was a long and hot walk from all the way from UTAR to Jaya One) and it was directed to Universiti LRT station. I was happy!

THEN, I missed my stop!

The bus was turning from Jalan Universiti back to the Federal Highway. It went up to the flyover which had a right turning to the Universiti LRT Station. There was a traffic light. It was red and the bus stopped. So some passengers went down. I thought the bus would turn right, which would lead me to directly the front of the LRT station. Little did I know that the bus route does not include the right turning! The bus when straight! After asking some passengers, I understood that the next station was MidValley and I should have gone down at the traffic light!

*sigh*

So I stopped at MidValley. Two very, very nice aunties and one young man told me about shuttle bus service at the South Court of MidValley, which would lead me directly to Bangsar LRT Station. So I headed there.

And guess what was the surprise?

The shuttle bus service is free! It is paid by MidValley! HOW COOL IS THAT?! I was so pleasantly surprised when I found out about this service (after asking another aunty)!

So now if I have no car to drive, at least I know there is such a convenient way to reach MidValley, rather than relying on KTM or buses. The only down side to it is, the bus arrives allegedly once every 30 minutes, depending on the traffic condition. But I guess that is still bearable. It's a free service anyway.

I am still pleasantly surprised! It's so kind of MidValley!

W Mitchell : It's not what happens to you; it's what you do about it.

I have heard of this name a couple of weeks back. Then earlier this week, my colleague recommended this special talk to me. It's an inspirational talk by a speaker called W Mitchell. It was at UTAR PJ. And it's free. So I signed up for it. The title is stated above.

It a less than two hours talk. Before the emcee invited Mitchell to the stage, a lady infected with Polio first graced the stage with her inspirational advice to the audience. Her name is Catharine Lim. I was slightly irritated because she was not what I signed up for, and she was eating the time dedicated for Mitchell. But she had her fair share of experience to share; experience which is valuable for some people.

She emphasized on the importance of staying true to oneself and accepting one's own uniqueness because "there is no other Chloe," as quoted from what she said earlier this morning. Everyone should give thanks to whatever he / she believes in every morning for being able to wake up and make it through another day with good health, she advised. She also stressed on the importance of having a passion, a goal in life. And, drive that passion. Drive your passion. There is no meaning to life if there is no passion, hence she stressed the importance of having a passion and realizing it.

After roughly 20 minutes, she handed the stage over to Mitchell, who was welcomed warmly by the audience with a loud applause.

W Mitchell was a cable car gripman in San Francisco. When he was riding his motorcycle one fine day, he was hit by a truck and his body was lit on fire. He was 65% burnt. He lost part of each ten of his fingers. After a long and grueling process of recovery, he continued his life with determination. He completed his training as a pilot and he especially appreciates his first solo flight. However, it was during one of his flights when the second accident happened. His aircraft crashed on takeoff due to ice on the wing of the aircraft. An investigation showed that it was Mitchell's mistake that the accident occurred. He sustained a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed waist down, sentencing him to a life on a wheelchair.

It is very unfortunate for so many bad things happening to one person. If it were me, I might end up blaming the whole world! Why me?! Why must this happen to me?! But this was not the case for Mitchell. Of course, he had his fair share of grieving period and his low times. But he decided to take control of his own life. He did not want to let all these accidents define who he was. He decided to take control of his life, to take control of what the accidents have made him into. It's a choice, his choice, to react to these incidents. And that is precisely the message that he was giving us this morning.

It's not what happens to you, it's what you do about it.

Isn't that true? A kid accidentally spills his coke on your shirt. What would naturally be your first reaction? Angry? You feel the rage of anger and spite literally building up in your body? Or, can you choose to smile at the kid and forgive him?

Of course you can! It's a choice. It's your choice. You can't predict, decide or control what life brings your way. But, you can control and decide how you react to life's unexpected obstacles. The control is in your hands.

That was basically what Mitchell was going on and on about.

It was a good talk. It was a talk so good, it got previous US President, Bill Clinton, recommending it. It was inspirational to a certain degree. Mitchell was a good speaker, humourous. He engaged the audience with his presence and he is not boring. At least not to me. However, like I said, it was inspirational only to a certain degree. Just a personal opinion.

What I want to say is, we can all take a page out of Mitchell's life. Shit happens. Life happens. So, do you want to sit there and cry and whine about why shit happens to you? Or do you want to stand up and walk away, walk to a new direction in your life and never ponder about that shit?

The decision is of course, yours.

Am I happy with the government right now?

I would never expect anyone at all to ask me that question mainly because I am not a very political person. There are two things which I usually do not talk about. One, football. Two, politics. (Though I have to admit, recently I have been more conscious politically, after Bersih especially)

So I was especially surprised, shocked even, when I received a call this morning from some random dude (from the government) I suppose, asking whether I had the time to conduct a telephone survey with him. I said, "Why not?" All I have is time.

It was a rather brief survey. I secretly hoped he could ask more questions so that I had the right excuse to stay away from my working desk. Too bad. He mainly focused on the public (yours truly)'s satisfaction towards all the implementations, policies and transformations that the government is doing right now. One question caught my attention. "Adakah transfomasi yang telah dilaksanakan oleh kerajaan telah meningkatkan sokongan rakyat terhadap kerajaan?" Just like all the answers I gave prior to this, I had plenty of things to say in my answers. But my answers were short because I lost my fluency in speaking Malay, and, this is obviously a survey conducted on behalf of the government so I obviously cannot say something too...rebellious, can I?

But all the colourful answers were flowing through my mind when that dude asked me all the let-me-test-you-to-see-if-you-will-be-supporting-BN questions. I almost wanted to just start shooting my answers in English at him.

So, have you received such calls?

Having Astro at home is NO GOOD!

You wanna know why?

Because there are just SO MANY programs to watch! At least, until 6th of May.

Because Astro was voted as the Best Brand (or something like that), Astro is allowing its subscribers to watch all 130 channels for free until 6th of May. SO IMAGINE, ALL THE GREAT MOVIES AND DRAMAS AND REALITY SHOWS THAT YOU GET TO WATCH!

It's a bigger deal for me because my family only subscribes for the most basic package, meaning no Starworld, no FOX, no Animax, no WLT and so on. So I have been on a movie / drama marathon since last Sunday! AND IT'S BAD! Because I supposedly have MANY things to do. Such as looking for a local university to study Finance!

SO, ASTRO IS NO GOOD!

Well of course I'm kidding. So if you have Astro and you hadn't realize the incentives it has been offering, now you know!
